Maybe I'm high off my ass for this one... then again, this would be the day for that sorta thing. But you know what? This song is silly, goofy... probably won't remember it 6 months... but it's actually a good song. And no, I'm not getting paid to write any parts of this.
Now if you wanna hear something really odd, check out the venerable Questlove's official remix of this joint. They did a whole new video, whole new take... Again, this is The Roots and Hanson. I'm old enough to remember Hanson's heyday or "hey hour" as the case may be. So this is pretty bizarre, but whatever. It's all music right? *coughs up blood* Seriously tho whoever thought you'd hear those two names on a track?
Honestly, that wasn't horrible. I mean, it really was pretty good, too. If there was ever cause for a celebratory toke...
The good folks over at Sphere Of Hip hop sat down with MuzeOne, formerly of Redeemed Thought to discuss his new album Cold War—coming this Spring—and his love of hiphop. Good stuff, check it out:
This is from a guy named Porter Stansberry, considered by man to be a right-wing nutjob whose referred to Obama as "Komrade Obama" on several occasions.
With that said, much of the following film has little to do with either party. Some of it sounds insane, but plausible and worht discussing.
Now, as an African American do I think Porter is a bigot? More than a little bit. Do I think he's a closet conservative who'd blindly ride for the right if they were in the WH? Yup.
But I think, once you separate those biases out, the global economic issues he's discussing are, at this point, pretty common concerns among many from all walks, all denominations and affiliations.
Will I buy his book/program and assorted goods? Nope.
Am I moved enough to do my own research and buckle up when the time comes? Damn skippy.
I'm on sort of a Bavu Blakes kick as of late. The more I hear of the dude's work, the more I like. There's a maturity to what he does that you don't get a lot these days. His ease of flow, lyricism and nuanced looks at topics is pretty unique.
'Smiley Faces', in the hands of lesser MCs would be your typical 'hater' track replete with assorted 'n'/'b'-words, rappers-is-just-actors, crabs-in-a-barrel-isms... But Bavu takes a slightly different angle by getting into the emotion of how it really feels to deal with people who don't seem to support you when you think they should. He's as vulnerable to it as they are to their own green-eyed demons.
Give it a listen when you get a chance. And watch out for those smiley faces.
Here's a long, strange flick on what some see as the devious roots of and impending collapse of America. Apparently America's been crumbling since about 1777, give or take.
There's some strong twisters coming out of the lonestar state... One of the better ones is a young man known as Bavu Blakes. He's as fine a flower as you'll hear, major label or not.
He got things cooking a couple weeks back at SXSW when he dropped a little "Eddie Long" on the unsuspecting crowd. Tho it's not quite the dart you might expect, given its title. And that's the genius in the track.
Give a listen and decide for yourself if Bavu is choosing sides or aiming for a deeper target.
You read the headline right. This week Tyler Perry's TBS show House Of Payne has officially aired its 210th episode—making it the 2nd longest running black sitcom in TV history, surpassing The Cosby Show.
How do I know this?
Well, I'm part of Tyler Perry's mailing list. Have been for a few years now. And in his latest to hit my in-box, he celebrates, reflects and talks the future.
=========
I always like to go back and reflect every now and then...
HOUSE OF PAYNE just celebrated its 210th episode. Can you believe that? I tell you, this show was built on a wing and a prayer. It was, and is, truly a miracle. How it got on the air and how it became the number one show among African-American households is a blessing to the hundredth degree. One day I will write this entire story, so that you can read how this happened, it really is inspiring. What a leap of faith it was!
I decided the other day to go back and look at some of the early reviews of the show. The one that stuck out the most was a headline that read, "THIS SHOW WILL NEVER MAKE IT!" Where is the person who wrote that? Isn't it interesting how some people can only speak negativity? I think they would have a stroke before they would admit they were wrong. People who can't live in balance are sad to me.
Anyway, we knew it would make it and so did you! Let this be a lesson for your own dreams. Don't worry about people telling you what you can't do. If God has said you will do it--just go in faith... (I just preached...LOL)
Let me just put this in perspective for you. HOUSE OF PAYNE has done more episodes than GOOD TIMES, more episodes than SANFORD AND SON, and even more episodes than THE COSBY SHOW. THE JEFFERSONS is the only show of this genre to have more episodes. Ella and Curtis are running a close second to George and Weezie. (smile)
Why am I telling you all of this? Well, last week on TBS, HOUSE OF PAYNE returned with all new episodes! I wanted to let you know because me being a fan of the show myself and being a fan of TBS, our home station, I know that finding new episodes can be a little confusing. I have received thousands of messages on my message board and Facebook page about how this show is aired, new episodes one week and reruns the next. I've gotten complaints about how the time changed without notice, and I hear your frustrations. Just know that TBS and I both know how important consistency is to maintaining an audience. To think that you keep finding this show and sending the ratings through the roof is a blessing. Your loyalty and commitment to HOUSE OF PAYNE has been tremendous. We do not take that for granted.
So, this Wednesday, be sure and tune in to HOUSE OF PAYNE.
Here's a sneak peek of what you can expect this season... Only on TBS.
Who knew a show produced by a guy most famous for well, you know, staring G-Money would be one of the most successful shows in TV history? Shouts to TBS for cutting a deal with Tyler Perry a while back to make this possible. Seriously. Lord knows BET wouldn't have done it. All that Viacom teet and 99% of what BET does is still crap. But enough Bob Johnson bashing. I digress.
Furthermore, I'll skip the Payne/Perry bashing. Perry's work has made him a lightening rod in the community and as longtime readers of Hustleknockin know, I've come down on both sides depending on the movie, the character or the scene. Perry's either your cup of tea or he's not.
What remains amazing is that no matter how many time Tyler Perry proves to Hollywood that Black audiences are hungry for content that is socio-economically aspirational without being unaccessible, uplifting and family-oriented they continue to ignore it.
I mean 90% of Perry's characters are... You know what? Don't get me started. It's Sunday and I'm too tired to complain. I'm go enjoy the weather.
Point is Perry crossed another milestone this passed week leaving more mixed feelings amongst us than a mulatto.
It's no secret Whites are becoming a minority in America; but according to the New York Times and the US Census Bureau, Fear of a Black Planet might be rolling up on us a few years sooner than previously expected (or hoped for.)
Numbers of Children of Whites Falling Fast
WASHINGTON — America’s population of white children, a majority now, will be in the minority during this decade, sooner than previously expected, according to a new report.
The Census Bureau had originally forecast that 2023 would be the tipping point for the minority population under the age of 18. But rapid growth among Latinos, Asians and people of more than one race has pushed it earlier, to 2019, according to William Frey, the senior demographer at the Brookings Institution who wrote the report about the shift, which has far-reaching political and policy implications.
The single largest increase was among Hispanics, whose birthrates are far above those of non-Hispanic whites, largely because the white population is aging and proportionally has fewer women in their child-bearing years. The median age of whites is 41, compared with 27 for Hispanics, the report said.
As a result, America’s future will include a far more diverse young population, and a largely white older generation. The contrast raises important policy questions. Will the older generation pay for educating a younger generation that looks less like itself? And while the young population is a potential engine of growth for the economy, will it be a burden if it does not have access to adequate education?
The population of white children fell by 4.3 million, or about 10 percent, in the last decade, while the population of Hispanic and Asian children grew by 5.5 million, or about 38 percent, according to the report, which was based on 2010 Census numbers.
The number of African-American children also fell, down by 2 percent. Over all, minorities now make up 46.5 percent of the under-18 population.
Whites are now the minority of child populations in 10 states, double the number from the previous decade, according to the report, and in 35 cities, including Atlanta, Phoenix and Orlando, Fla. Vermont had the largest drop in its child population of any state.
The changes also have political implications. Though whites are still 63 percent of the population as a whole, that is down from 75.6 percent in 1990, and minorities, particularly Hispanics, who now outnumber blacks, are becoming an increasingly important part of the electorate.
Mr. Frey estimates that whites will slip into the minority by about 2041. The number of whites grew by just 1.2 percent in the population as a whole in the last decade, a fraction of the 43 percent growth among Latinos.
No this isn't a belated April Fool's joke. Tho, it's still April, and this is BET we're talking about, so anything's possible. You'll have to be the judge of that.
Here's a recent interview from Fox Business Channel with Debra Less, CEO of BET Networks discussing all the *coughs* great programming on BET and how BET has *gags* transformed its lineup by instituting higher standards for the content it airs.
i've had the pleasure of seeing both of these brothers live... two of the baddest live acts you ever wanna see. catch 'em if you haven't/can/wanna hear great live music
Plain, girl-next-door name... Cute face... and one of the bestest songs in years. Tell this song don't sound like sunshine a good date and a kiss on the cheek?
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm gonna go skip thru somebody's sprinklers with a puppy and see if a cute girl comes by so I can flash my pearly whites.
Once, many moons and several more suns ago, I actually saw Stacy Lattisaw live in concert... Once I figured out what she meant by "nail it to the wall", i knew she was my wife in waiting and all I had to do was step up and ask. Yup, I was gonna marry Stacy Lattisaw. But then, as I was in the midst of prepping my pop-the-question-speech, Cindy Herron showed up and ruined everything...but that's another story.
Now chances are, you have no clue who Ms. Lattisaw is; and that's ok. But just know, that she was almost "Mr. Black Canseco"... which woulda been weird because I was a minor at the time and... eh, nevermind.
Just hit 'play' and if the rhythm moves you to do so, nail it.
Yesterday I posted a 4 minute clip popularly known as "Interview With A Christian". Today, I found the full length interview. The interview is coutresy of Darrel Rundus of the Great News Network (www.thegreatnews.com) did with an atheist. It's about an hour long so I don't expect you to sit thru it all here. But give it a listen—as much as you can... It's really compelling stuff.
It's funny to hear how well-versed this guy is and how compassionate he seems about faith and what he he thinks faith should be about. Personally, I'm not sure if this guy is a fraud. He could be a Christian mascarading as an Atheist or a guy who's simply not a convinced, convicted atheist. Who knows, only him for sure. But his arguments are pretty compelling.
So yes, his live show sucks. Yes, he got canned from the most lucrative and arguably the easiest gig in modern TV history. And yes, he's clearly an imploding drug addict with an ego the size of our national debt. And yes, if you believe their story, he's also taken a swing at one or more of his ex-wives and ex-girlfriends. And yes, in a year or so we'll all look back and go "damned shame how he wen't out like that."
Meanwhile, with all that said, tell me this isn't pretty funny.
So why am I hopping on the flaming sputtering bandwagon that is Charlie Sheen's guerilla show? Because of two reasons: (1) This really long bit proves once and for all that Sheen is a talented guy who is now showing signs of being willing to laugh at himself.
He gets that parodying himself is gonna be part of his career from now on whether he ever establishes himself in another role or not.
Number 2: You guys notice the last frame? TECATE. That's a real brand. Tecate's not a huge brand, and yes they're a liquor brand, but they're a brand. An actual brand that people have heard of and that's reasonably respected cut a check for this. And so far, 100k views in, nobody's coming with pitchforks for 'em.
This is a pretty compelling interview with an Atheist on Christianity. Sadly he comes off as a better Christian than most Christians... myself included.
